The Modern Master

Jeremy Lipking was born in Santa Monica in 1975, the son of a painter. Though he never took an art class in high school, he enrolled at California Art Institute in 1997, hungry to learn.

At just 25, one year into his professional career, Lipking won top prize at the California Art Club’s 2001 annual exhibition, announcing his arrival to the art world. His luminous figures and landscapes, painted with breathtaking technical skill, seemed to channel the spirit of John Singer Sargent and Anders Zorn.

In 2013, American Artist magazine named him one of the 75 greatest artists of all time. In 2014, he won the Prix de West Purchase Award and Best in Show at the Art Renewal Center’s International ARC Salon.

His talents: Virtuoso brushwork, masterful control of values and edges, loose painterly technique, and the ability to capture psychological depth in portraits and figures.

Greatest achievements: Recognition as one of America’s premier realists before age 40, major museum purchases, and reviving classical realism for contemporary audiences.
