Jimmy Nelson’s Kazakh Eagle Hunters, Altai Mountains is a large-format photograph shot on a 4×5 inch camera in March 2011 in the Bayan-Ölgii province of Mongolia. The image shows three Kazakh men in traditional dress with golden eagles perched on their shoulders, photographed against the snow-covered Altai Mountains at sunrise. The photograph took four days to create because of insufficient light in the early mornings. On the fourth morning, temperatures dropped to -20°C on top of the mountain. Nelson removed his gloves to operate the camera and his fingers literally froze to the metal. He began crying from the pain. Two Kazakh women who had followed the group up the mountain noticed his desperation and one woman took his hands and cradled them inside her jacket until feeling returned, breaking strict Sunni Muslim codes of modesty to help him achieve the photograph. The image became one of the most recognizable from Nelson’s Before They Pass Away project, which documented 35 indigenous tribes over three years across 44 countries. When Nelson first visited in 2011, only 40 Kazakh eagle hunters remained. By 2023, that number had grown to 400, with the Kazakh returning to ancestral homelands and recognizing the worth of their traditions.
